Ergonomics is the process of reducing worker injury through effective workplace design. Upon completion of this learning event, employees will demonstrate knowledge of how to implement ergonomic principles in office settings to minimize or eliminate potential hazards. We are all at risk of developing back pain by the way we work. The Health & Safety Executive has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the issue of back pain which is responsible for 1 in 6 days off work in the UK each year. The campaign aims to give practical advice on what employers and employees can do to manage back pain. As part of the campaign the Health & Safety Executive has worked with top ergonomist Tom Stewart to develop an animation which highlights the simple practical steps employers and employees can take to reduce the risks and associated costs of back pain.

CDF SHOUT Elections Info

Posted by admin on

Hi future officers, and thank you for watching this video! Here is a summary of my speaking points: 1. Uninsured children can be covered through the CHIP program, which is like a children’s version of medicaid. 2. CDF SHOUT enrolls families for CHIP, but we also do outreach towards children. 3. There are five offices available. Each one has a distinct role, but all officers should contribute in whatever way he or she is able to. 4. If we haven’t met yet, I would like to have lunch with you! Please send me back the application as soon as possible so that we can schedule a lunch meeting. If you’re off campus, I’ll pay for your meal. The application is attached to the email I sent, but here it is again for public download. tinyurl.com Offices: Executive Chair, VP of Policy, VP of Outreach, Secretary, Treasurer

The Best Task or Executive Chair for Prolonged Sitting

Posted by admin on

Lifeform’s Midback Executive Chair, from Relax the Back Store, Burnaby, BC MY REVIEW: As a PhD Candidate and a web designer, I spend 14 hours sitting in front of my computer, almost 365 days a year. I have been doing this since 1995, but it’s not until I came to the GVA that I started researching the “perfect chair”. This included reading books such as The Chair by Galen Granz and The Breathing Book by Donna Farhi. One thing I’ve learnt is that the perfect posture doesn’t exist. Or rather, the perfect posture is… the next one. Healthy mind and body are all about movement, so the first thing a long-term use desk chair should do is let you easily switch between several different postures. Unless you are a pro athlete, it’s unlikely you’ll feel consistently concentrated and comfortable for more than a couple of hours without changing your position. Many chairs like “The Leap” by Steelcase or Herman Miller’s “Aeron” boast sophisticated ergonomic features. But they look and feel too plastic. You can get a feel for this when you slide onto the memory foam and contoured seat of a “Lifeform— and that’s on top of the half a dozen different handles for adjusting the chair’s elements to every possible angle. Ahh, memory foam, is there anything it can’t do? By being pressure and heat sensitive, memory foam conforms to individual body shapes. This spreads your weight to a larger surface area, reducing pressure points that cause reduced blood flow and fatigue. The comfortable effect
