In the 21st century the huge advances made to computer technology mean thats that more and more time is being spent by people sitting at desks.  These days the average office worker could be sitting at his desk for several hours a day and without a comfortable well-designed chair there could be serious health implications.  But it is not only the office situation where ergonomic chairs are important.  They can also be used in the home situation where a properly designed lounge chair can make life that little bit more comfortable.

The difference between an ergonomic chair and an ordinary chair is that an ergonomic chair is designed to be able to be adjusted to suit the person sitting on it.  This means that the most comfortable seating position can be found simply and easily.  The increased production of a person sitting in a well-designed ergonomic chair can be quite substantial and certainly worth the small investment required to upgrade to such a chair.  Not only that, the person who sits in a well-designed chair will feel much more refreshed and relaxed at the end of the day.  Another benefit over an ordinary chair is the reduction in spinal, back, shoulder and neck injuries that can result from sitting in a poorly designed chair for extended periods.

Designing an ergonomic chair that can be adjusted to suit the user is a highly technical feat.  Because all humans are different in there are many things which have to be taken into consideration in the design.  The height of the chair seat must be able to be adjusted easily as does the backrest and the armrests.  These chairs also need, in the case of an ergonomic office chair, to swivel so that the person sitting on it can easily reach items in a 360° arc.  The chair must also be able to easily move on its castors while at the same time staying in position when necessary.  On a well designed ergonomic chair the backrest should be able to tilt and have a tension control knob to vary the ease at which it can be made to tilt.  Together all of these factors help provide a chair that will allow very comfortable sitting position and prevent aches and pains.

There are many types of ergonomic chairs available from ergonomic lounge chairs to ergonomic dental chair to the ergonomic executive office chair and many variations in between.  Although there are countless variations they all have one thing in common and that is to provide very comfortable chairs in which to work and relax by assisting the user to maintain a correct posture.  Although this ergonomic chair review is brief I will outline the various types of ergonomic chairs and their benefits  In more detail in subsequent articles.
